Fashion Feature: How to Style Suspenders

Welcome to a new segment (can I use that word for a blog post? Let’s go with it) where I walk you through a trend that I’ve been loving and think you should know about! It’s like a more in-depth version of the seasonal shopping list.

Your Summer 2018 Shopping List

Keep up! Here’s the last seasonal shopping list!

So last time we talked about trends (don’t remember? Click above to keep up!), one of the hot topics was overalls! They’re an amazing, versatile layering piece and a summer essential for a casual outfit.

I’ve been down for the overalls trend since I first spotted them in the spring, so when I started seeing suspenders sprinkled around, I knew it was only the beginning.

Suspenders are so classic and unique! And they’re not just for suits – they can be styled with casual pieces to create a vintage-inspired look. For example, layering them on top of a basic shirt adds an instant vintage appeal to an outfit.

I’ve also been seeing suspender culottes all over Instagram, so when I came across a pair at Winner’s, I had to snap them up. They’re basically the mature older sister of overalls! They have the versatility of overalls, the vintage appeal of suspenders, and the classic silhouette of culottes (perfect for making legs look longer!).

The ones that I’m wearing are from a brand called Japna, but I’ll leave some shop links to similar styles below!

Finally, I’ve been completely obsessed with suspender bikinis! They’re so much cooler and sexier than a regular two-piece bathing suit, and they almost give the illusion of a one-piece because of how high-waisted the bottoms are.

I personally love using the two pieces as separates for layering in other outfits. For example, I layered the red top under my suspender culottes for an easy outfit on a hot day.

Also because I totally thought I was going to hit up a rooftop pool that day and wanted to make it easier to change from the day look to the poolside look (#hack).

I also used the black bottoms in this concert look, layered over a white t-shirt and paired with distressed black jeans for an edgy-meets-vintage vibe.

Not convinced yet? Check out the shop links below for some extra inspiration – I’m sure you’ll find at least one look to inspire some suspender-envy.
