5 Fashion Must-Haves for Fall

I feel like, at this time of year, there are two kinds of people. There are those who are still clutching to the last of summer in their dresses and shorts, and then there are those who traded in their summer gear for sweaters mid-August. Whichever group you associate with, there’s no denying that fall is on the way – it was 14 degrees in Toronto last week! All is not lost, though – I’ve got you covered with this ultra-basic list of fall fashion essentials. Would I leave you hanging?

The biggest fashion hack is to make an outfit better by accessorizing. If you’re the kind of person who prefers sticking to neutral looks over putting together bold outfits, then you probably know the power of accessories. Adding a simple necklace (or two, or three… or four…) can make a basic outfit look much more chic and put-together. The fall equivalent is scarves! A scarf is such an easy piece because all you do is throw it on top – seriously. They’re also very simple – if you feel put-off by bold prints, a scarf would be a good starting place to experiment.

Everyone knows that a leather jacket is a solid staple for the fall – and one that you can wear year-round if the weather permits. It doesn’t have to be pricey, but you get what you pay for, so if you invest in a good one, you won’t regret it.

But here’s some tea – it’s not the only good option for a fall jacket. I think denim jackets are an amazing transitional piece, and they look so adorable layered over fall sweaters! And if you feel like a light-wash denim jacket is too summery, consider a black or dark-wash version! One look I loved last year (and might re-wear this year) is a lace slip dress under a turtleneck sweater dress, with a black denim jacket on top. Bonus points if you add a hat.

Another amazing option is to opt for a bomber! Or even a blazer – printed blazers are very on-trend this season, and they make for great jackets in the mild September weather. You could also opt for a classic trench coat, which would be especially cozy come October & November.

I’m not gonna front like I don’t wear boots year-round, but I will say that if you don’t have a pair of sleek fall boots, you should get some. What I love about boots is that there’s a pair for every style – which is why I’d recommend getting multiple.

I think a pair of sleek black boots are essential, but I also love my Doc Martens and expect to be wearing them until the snow hits, so your choice of an everyday boot is by no means limited. However, I would definitely recommend also having a boot with a twist – think appliques, fun colors, glitter, an interesting heel – this kind of piece will spice up a basic outfit with no effort on your part, aside from putting them on.

You knew this was coming! Come on, how was I going to make a fall essentials post and not include sweaters? Here’s a comprehensive list of every kind of sweater you need.

First off, you need a cardigan. Not only are they perfect for layering, but they also make for a great topper on days when it’s chilly in the morning but super hot and sunny in the afternoon.

Next, you need a turtleneck. They look sleek and classy, but they can also be styled to look super casual. If you’re not into turtlenecks, maybe try a mock neck for a similar effect with less choking.

Finally, you need a crewneck sweater. I prefer mine to be slightly oversized so I can layer them over collared shirts, tuck them into my jeans and still be cozy. Bonus – they can double as sweater dresses!

As an honorable mention, I will also advocate for a hoodie. I’ve recently discovered how cozy and fashionable a cropped hoodie looks layered under a cardigan and paired with sleek bottoms. Plus, coziness is always key.

Specifically wide-brim hats! These are such an amazing add-on for a fall outfit – if you didn’t already look trendy, a hat would take you there. A neutral color will go a long way and will pair perfectly with many different looks. And if you’re not into the wide-brims, opt for a beanie instead! It’ll give you the same trendy look with a more relaxed air.
